Space Cadet

Questioning public space is what Jakob Kolding shows us through his xerox/collage paper works and sculptures. His art is an activist ode to what architectural order cannot control:     our thoughts. Kolding (born 1971 in Alberslund, Denmark) trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 2000. He currently lives and works in Berlin.

I was first introduced to Jakob's work at the MCA's Skyscraper: Art and Architecture Against Gravity exhibition this summer. A take-away poster by Kolding now hangs in my apartment inspiring me to think more about art as activism; not marching in the streets, but rather visually claiming my concerns through image, sign/text, and line. This method can allow for a contemplative assessment of current culture's relationship between space and behavior.

This 2007 Artforum article reviews Kolding's first museum show and gives extended insight into his process.

Paul's thoughts

Things Paul Roth suggested:

make tougher images
be a gun - faster, closer, intense
keep editing down - keep shooting
continue to work in book – sophisticated sequencing
think in multiple spreads – consider the larger flow of the book

look at/study: Harry Callahan, Josef Koudelka's Exiles, Robert Frank's The Americans, William Eggleston's Guide

My Photo
I am testing streets, alleyways, and porches for the mood, the symbolism, the unknown, and the light.
