I found this sereis by Parr only a few months after I traveled to Europe this past Summer. What I connected with in this work was how he captured strangers in the right moment to show his point. Martin Parr's photographs show monuments and tourist sights in a way that counter the ideal photographic moment. They go beyond travel photographs and voyeuristically document the traveler.

When I got back from Europe I put a roll of 35mm color in my recently bought Olympus MJU-1. That was strange. I had only been shooting black and white for the past month and now since I have been in DC and on my most recent trip to Chatham, Cape Cod, color seems to be my interest.

So amongst the estimated 160 4x5 sheets and 12 rolls of black and white that I still have to develop from Europe I have about 30 4x5 sheets and four rolls of 35mm color to send out from Chatham.

I have been going to Chatham almost every summer since birth. My paternal grandmother owns a house there that was once her mothers, and Granny and Grandpa live there in the Summer months. All of Cape Cod is a sanctuary on the Atlantic coast- small drinking towns with fishing problems- bumper stickers read. On this trip I did theusual. Granny is a fabulous cook and the most enthusiastic story teller; I learn more about her every conversation. Her history and her family lineage. Grandpa and I talk about economics, current US politics, and how I really need to get a job! All the while showing a smirk in the corner of his lip, he has so much confidence. Grandparents are so good at helping you think things through.

We went on a picnic at"the cut"- where Stage Harbor(right) enters into Nantucket Sound(dark blue). I brought the Razzle on the boat. I went to the last baseball game in the season, the Chatham A's were the worst in the Cape league this year. Oyster Pond was about 78 degrees.

Europe 2011: from Frankfurt to Budapest

So I returned from Europe three weeks ago. I shot about 250 sheets of b/w negative 4x5 and 12 rolls of b/w 35mm. I have started to developed the 4x5 and I have been happy with the results so far. My sister Liz proposed a collaborative project as we traveled together, I accepted. This project was made to map our travel from city to city. Our medium was colored pen on paper and our process was controlled by the movement of the train, side to side, slowing and speeding. The drawing lasted the full duration of the train ride. There was a list of rules that we gave ourselves to confront issues such as toilet breaks, and overnight sleeper cars. Liz is currently experimenting with these drawings to form a final idea for the project and an exhibition of our collaborative drawings and my photographs is the goal.

My trip was fantastic overall. The travels went as follows and were all by train once in Europe. Flew into Frankfurt, Germany and trained to Cologne. Met my sister Liz and my friend Marin who lives in Cologne. My sister and I stayed with Marin for five days and spend time with his roommate Tim, Tim's girlfriend Miri, Ronald a bandmate, Waldemar, Pete, and many great others. There were parties, parks with grilling, DJs in clubs till 10am, and amazing Kolsch beer. Liz and I traveled next to Berlin.

Waldemar hooked us up with his friend Kai who lived in Wedding, a district due north of central Berlin. Kai lived with two other roommates, Alex and Vanessa who we spent a good amount of time with. Berlin was a four day stay with beautiful museums and galleries, relaxing cafés with good music, a lot of apparent art and youth culture, and the most parks in any city we visited.

Waldemar also hooked us up with Lisa in Vienna. Nine hours later we met Lisa and she greeted us with a homemade dinner and Stiegl beer; then spent two days with her, a spontaneous decision. Vienna is a gorgeous city with an amazing quality of life. You can drink the tap water and you can swim in the Danube river (both come straight from the mountains). I bought an Olympus MJU 1 35mm film camera at a large flea market for five Euro, it amazingly had a working battery and no lens damage. The MuseumsQuartier has an outside seating area where you can order food and drinks and sit surrounded by four museums. Another highlight was going to a birthday part under a bridge graffited and lit by black light. I took a long exposure there my friends faces lit with lighters. Two days in Vienna was not enough but Liz and I were already behind schedule in our travel plans so off we went on a three hour ride to Budapest.

This was going to be the first time we stayed with a couchsurfer, which Liz and I already knew it was going to be very different than staying with the friends of Waldemar. It rained shortly after we walked to a park in the north of Pest. Barbara our host lived on the western side of the Danube river, Buda. I am still processing the film from Budapest so my story will stop here until further development.
